AWWA Gate Valve Design Standards
Some customers may be confused about the difference between AWWA C509 and AWWA C515 when purchasing an AWWA Gate Valve.
As a professional manufacturer of AWWA gate valves, we offer the following suggestions.
AWWA C509 and AWWA C515 are two different types of resilient-seated gate valve standards published by the American Water Works Association (AWWA).
Here are detailed descriptions and differences between these two standards:

Differences Between AWWA C509 and AWWA C515
Both AWWA C509 and AWWA C515 are standards for resilient-seated wedge gate valves, but the C515 standard is an improvement and optimization of the C509 standard, primarily focused on reducing weight and optimizing materials. The choice between valves conforming to either standard depends on specific application requirements and operating environments.

AWWA C509 is the standard of the American Water Works Association for resilient seated gate valves and swing Check Valves used in water supply and drainage systems. Its full name is:AWWA C509-21: Standard for Resilient-Seated Gate Valves and Swing Check Valves for Water and Wastewater Service
This standard specifically specifies the material, design, manufacturing, testing, and performance requirements for resilient seated gate valves and swing check valves with nominal diameters ranging from 3 inches to 48 inches (DN75 to DN1200) used for water supply and sewage treatment services.
Key technical requirements of the standard
1. Design and Structure
- Valve body: It is usually required to be cast as a whole to ensure strength and integrity. The material is mostly ductile iron (complying with ASTM A126/A395 standards, etc.), which has excellent strength and toughness.
- End connection: The standard covers flange connections, and the flange size and pressure rating must comply with relevant standards such as AWWA C207.
- Valve seat: It must be made of elastic material (such as NBR nitrile rubber, EPDM ternary ethylene propylene rubber) and permanently bonded or fastened to the valve body or disc, and cannot be replaced. This provides excellent sealing performance and particle inclusiveness.
- Valve stem: usually made of stainless steel (such as 416 or 304/316 stainless steel), with sufficient strength and corrosion resistance.
- Operation method: The valve should be equipped with a handwheel or wrench for operation. For large-diameter valves, the standard also considers the possibility of installing gearboxes or actuators in the future (such as square head drive sleeves).
2. Pressure level
- Pressure rating: Valves are typically designed for working pressures of 150 psi (10.3 bar) or 200 psi (13.8 bar).
- Shell strength test: The valve body must be able to withstand a hydrostatic pressure test at least twice the rated working pressure without structural damage or permanent deformation.
- Sealing test: Conduct a bidirectional sealing test at 1.1 times the rated working pressure, requiring zero leakage. This is a very strict and critical requirement for AWWA C509.
3. Performance and Testing
The standard specifies a series of mandatory tests to verify valve quality:
- Shell strength test: Verify the structural integrity of pressure bearing components such as valve bodies and valve covers.
- Seat sealing test: Verify that the valve can achieve zero leakage from both directions when fully closed.
- Operating torque test: Measure the torque required for the valve to open and close at maximum pressure differential, ensuring its ease of operation and providing data for actuator selection.
- Durability (cycle) test: Simulate the valve to perform multiple opening and closing cycles under pressure to verify its long-term reliability. (This test is usually a sampling test)
