Resilient seated butterfly valves are pretty straightforward: they have a metal disc that pairs with a non-metallic seat. Because the seat is non-metallic, they can’t handle high temperatures or much wear. Usually, they work between -29℃ and 200℃—NBR seats top out at 80℃, while FKM can go up to 200℃. Pressure-wise, they’re mostly for PN10 to PN40. So you don’t want to use them in places with high heat, high pressure, or media that has solid particles.

1.2 Metal seated butterfly valve: Wear & High-Temperature Resistance for Harsh Working Conditions

Metal seated butterfly valves are different—they use metal for both the disc and the seat. Common metals here are stainless steel or alloy steel, and sometimes the seat gets a hard alloy coating to make it even harder and more wear-resistant. The ones you’ll usually come across are triple-eccentric metal seated butterfly valves, pneumatic metal seated ones, stainless steel metal seated models, and turbine-driven lug metal seated valves. These are the go-to choices for tough conditions with high temperatures and pressure.

Most hard-sealed valves use an eccentric design—single, double, or triple eccentric. The triple-eccentric one is especially good because it keeps the disc from touching the seat when the valve is opening or closing. That means almost no friction or wear, which makes the valve super stable and long-lasting, even in really harsh environments.

They also have different actuation options. Pneumatic ones—both double-acting and single-acting (with a spring return)—react quickly, which is important for emergency shut-offs. For bigger pipelines, usually DN ≥ 600, turbine-driven valves are better. They use a worm gear to generate more torque, so they can handle the heavy-duty work in those large systems.

The core strengths of hard-sealed butterfly valves are high-temperature resistance, wear resistance and corrosion resistance. The body and disc are usually made of WCB carbon steel, 304/316 stainless steel, and can adapt to highly corrosive industries such as chemical, metallurgy and oil & gas after special anti-corrosion treatment. However, since metal sealing surfaces cannot achieve the tightness of non-metallic ones, hard-sealed butterfly valves generally allow slight leakage with lower sealing class, and feature higher manufacturing cost and slightly more difficult installation and maintenance.
